Enter the quote, materials cost, labor cost and hours on the job. The Margin column shows what you will keep; under twenty percent shows as Thin and should be repriced before it goes out.

What to write on every estimate

Example

A homeowner wants a 48-amp charger in a detached garage. The house has a 150 A panel with three spaces and gas heat. The load calculation leaves room for a 60 A circuit. The run is 70 feet, half of it buried. The estimator prices wire, conduit, a trench, the charger circuit, the permit and two inspections; labor is six hours for a journeyman and apprentice. The quote goes out with the trench restoration listed as not included, and the customer approves the same day.

After the job

Compare actual parts and hours with the estimate. If a kind of job keeps coming in over, change your price for it, not just the next quote.

When you need a permit

Most places require one for new circuits, panel and service changes, EV chargers, generators, hot tubs, and any rewiring. Small like-for-like swaps (a switch, an outlet, a light fixture on an existing box) usually do not. When in doubt, call the permit office and write down who you spoke to.

When it fails

Set the permit to Correction needed and write the inspector's exact words in Inspector notes. Fix it within two working days, book the re-inspection, and tell the customer what changed. Corrections show on the Dashboard until they pass. If the same correction comes up twice in a quarter, it is a training topic for the next team meeting.

Example

A restaurant's kitchen circuits fail the final: the walk-in cooler needs a disconnect within sight of the unit. Casimir adds the disconnect the next morning, the office books the re-inspection, and the permit moves to Final passed two days later. The job is then marked done and the balance invoice goes out.

Daily checklist

Working live

Live work is the exception, never the plan. If a job truly needs it (troubleshooting with a meter, for example), the lead electrician decides, uses the right PPE for the energy level, and keeps a second person nearby.

Apprentices

An apprentice never works alone on a panel or service. The journeyman checks every termination before covers go back on, and explains why. Short daily lessons on site are how the next journeyman is made.

Old houses

Expect anything in buildings older than about 1970: knob-and-tube spliced to modern cable, ungrounded outlets that look grounded, and aluminum branch wiring. Mark what you find on the customer's record so the next person is not surprised.

If something goes wrong

Example

On a troubleshooting call in a 1950s duplex, Faye locks out the breaker for the kitchen circuit and tests: the outlet is still live. A second circuit shares the box. She finds it, locks it out too, and notes the shared box on the customer's record before closing up.
